CHARACTER NAME: YoRHa Unit Type A No. 2
CANON & HISTORY: NieR: Automata, history + translation of the stage play which details the events that happened three years before the start of the game.
AGE: Physically ~18 to early twenties, chronologically 7
CANON POINT: Post-ending E
PERSONALITY:
"I never quite realized... how beautiful this world is."
YoRHa battle units are programmed to be calm and focused, designed to be seasoned warriors with an unshakable loyalty to their cause of furthering mankind's glory. As a prototype for later generations of attacker units, A2 embodied all of these traits before and even after the Pearl Harbor Descent Mission, albeit to different degrees. Her first official appearance is half-way through the first act of the game, shrouded in mystery and equally as taciturn when she commits regicide the moment 2B and 9S encounter Immanuel in the Forest Kingdom. The pair were hesitant to act when it was revealed that Immanuel was actually a Machine newborn, young and defenseless, but A2 shared none of that discomfort and quickly dispatched him in a single strike. Focused, emotionless, and professional: all the qualities of a YoRHa android.
In actuality, A2 is none of these things.
The main turning point in A2's personality was the loss of her entire squadron during the Pearl Harbor Descent Mission three years ago. By the time they reached the surface of the earth, most of the squadron was destroyed and A2 had assumed command over the remaining units, despite being hesitant and unsure of her qualifications. Regardless of having no support from Command, A2 carried out the rest of the mission to the best of her abilities, leading the remainder of her squadron and the rest of the Resistance (a failed android expedition hundreds of years before her time) to the Tower. One by one, each of her comrades were destroyed, all sacrificing themselves to ensure A2's survival in fulfilling the mission. Upon leaving the Tower, A2 had nothing left aside from her freedom and the knowledge of the fact that everything they were fighting for was a lie. Both came at too high of a cost and since then A2 has carried the weight of her squadron's sacrifice, left to wander the earth alone branded as a fugitive by YoRHa for desertion.
Perhaps the most important aspect of A2's personality is her tenacity: in her unwavering will to survive even with the odds stacked against her, no matter how much she wants to die so that she may finally join her squadron. A2 forced herself to live through sheer willpower and determination, fueled by her hatred for the Machines. Throughout those three years, A2 had isolated herself completely, operating on a violently reckless, self-destructive drive to destroy every last Machine, which ultimately became her purpose for living and defined the rest of her continued existence. However, her self-imposed vengeance hides the guilt and regret she carries for the loss of her comrades. As with any other android, A2 thrives on a sense of purpose and just as with any weapon, they need to be given a trajectory: placing the blame on something tangible like the Machines and destroying each of them herself allowed her to feel like she was actually accomplishing something, that she was making progress in her goal, distracting her from the constant guilt and loneliness that plagued her. It's important to note that in spite of the loss she experienced and the gravity of the truths she learned at the Tower, A2 did not lose her sense of self. While she may want to die with every fiber of her being, she holds on to the belief that she owes it to her comrades to continue living, and she will carry it out until she is ultimately destroyed.
But beneath the guilt and loneliness lies compassion; A2 is surprisingly kind despite her blunt and aggressive demeanor, and often shows mercy even in situations where it would benefit her the least. The biggest examples of this is when she takes 2B's life, destroying her before the logic virus could completely deteriorate her programming and fulfilling her request to take care of 9S. While her mission of destroying the Machines was what kept her alive, it was a fruitless endeavor, and taking care of 9S and ensuring he survived seemed to be a more feasible goal to accomplish. Time and again she spares and reaches out to him despite his numerous attempts on her life, all in the hopes that he would eventually return to his curious and kind personality. Even more astonishing was her choice in sparing Pascal upon realizing he was harmless, and even helped him protect the Machine children at the Abandoned Factory. It's safe to say that Pascal was the closest she had to a friend despite being a Machine, and when faced with his request for her to destroy him or erase his memories, A2 was reluctant to do so but eventually carried it out as his last wish.
Although she had isolated herself from others and pursued her mission to destroy all Machines with a single-minded determination, her interactions with Pascal, 2B and 9S prove that she craves companionship, longing for that sense of meaning and belonging that she had prior to the Pearl Harbor mission. At her core, A2 cares about others despite how her personality may lead people to believe otherwise; her instinct to keep people at a distance stems from her devotion to her old squadron and the guilt that she could not do more for them. So, in the end, she'll live for them instead.
POWERS: Here's a link to her abilities section. Some details below:
A2 specializes in melee combat with a particularly aggressive move set, holding the rank for highest potential damage output out of all the characters in the game. As a prototype, A2 shares some of 9S' and 2B's functions, most notably her ability to hack into mechanical or magical targets with the assistance of a pod. Like 2B, she is capable of wielding a wide variety of melee weapons such as one-handed and two-handed swords, spears, and bracers. What sets A2 apart from them, however, is her ability to use berserk mode. By releasing her limiters, A2's damage output increases exponentially at the cost of severely lowered defense; something that's best saved as a last resort. However, by equipping the right plug-in chips, the severity of damage sustained from using berserk mode would be offset by the massive health regain.
OTHER: It's implied that A2's AI parameters are not up to par with current YoRHa models. Sometimes she needs things to be put in simpler terms in order for her to completely understand.
GAME INFO;
MAGIC ABILITY: Retrocognition - A2 will have the ability to discern events that happened in the past to any person or object via touch. How far back in someone/thing's past she can see and how long she can continue to view it will be limited by her inexperience as well as by the person she is touching (i.e.: if the person naturally possesses a strong will to resist psychic abilities, etc).
Initially, it will be difficult for her to control, but she may eventually improve her proficiency to be able to project her past memories to others.
PRICE: 2B's sword, Virtuous Contract
ACCLIMATION: 9. As an android, A2 is designed to be adaptable and survive in all kinds of settings and situations. A2 herself is highly independent and has no issues with creating and following her own objectives, even if it may go against authority. With nothing left for her to go back to, she likely won't be very concerned with her circumstances aside from how and why she got here in the first place, as she was technically destroyed prior to being reactivated. She'll be suspicious of her new circumstances at first and will want to uncover information herself.
